The message in church yesterday really struck home with me. The sermon was focused on Hezekiah’s leadership of Judah. A nation that, under his guidance, worshipped The Lord and had His favor. The powerful nation of Assyria meet its downfall upon trying to capture the aforementioned city. When confronted by the Assyrian military, Hezekiah knew he had no chance without the Almighty’s help. So after military leaders from both nations had begun negotiating Judah’s surrender or slaughter, Hezekiah laid his nation’s troubles before God and asked for His help.
After concluding his sermon, the pastor made an offer to the congregation to write down their “Assyria” on a slip on paper, to bring that piece of paper forth, and to lay it on the steps leading up to the stage. The idea was to symbolically lay our troubles down before The Lord. We were taking our struggle(s), the thing we’ve really been wrestling with, our “Assyria,” and humbly asking for His aid.
While I didn’t participate in this symbolic laying down of troubles before God, I did come come home and make a list of my “Assyrias,” and I wanted to share what I came up with. These certainly are not my only struggles, but they were the main ones that immediately came to mind.
Anorexia is my Assyria.
Self-harm is my Assyria.
Mistrust is my Assyria.
Perfectionism is my Assyria.
So now I ask you, what is your Assyria? What are you struggling with? Wrestling with? Anxious over?
