Three years ago, I would’ve called you crazy if you’d told me I would ever enjoy doing my hair. I probably would’ve called you crazy if you’d told me that I’ve even enjoy having hair. I washed my hair out of necessity, conditioned when it came to mind, and ran a brush through my hair in the mornings just to get it all up into a ponytail. Oh, the horrid ponytails I used to wear my hair in every. single. day. That was then though, and my locks rarely see ponytails today. Times certainly have changed! I genuinely care about my hair now, and I did my best to help it out when I wasn’t feeding it properly.
When I wasn’t eating enough, I got myself into the habit of a good haircare routine to try and make up for not allowing my hair to have nutrients from within. I found a great shampoo and conditioner for my hair type, was gentle when brushing, deep conditioned once a week, slept with it in a braid to prevent damage, and used leave-in conditioners on the ends. My only crime was flat ironing my hair almost daily because I was too lazy to bother with doing anything more. Eventually though, I even cut down significantly on the use of heat. My hair still wasn’t in the best of shapes though. It didn’t come out in clumps, but it did fall out almost constantly. It never entirely quit growing, but it did slow down a lot. It lost it’s shine and it broke easily and it generally just didn’t look all that great. No matter how kind I was to it on the outside, it was being starved.
Call me vain, but after three months of being on a meal plan and eating again as well as keeping up with a good haircare routine, I’ve seen so much improvement in the health of my hair. And that, well, it makes me quite excited. It’s growing faster now, and it looks better than ever. The last time I had it cut, my stylist even commented on the noticeable difference of how much healthier my tresses are. It may seem irrelevant, but having healthy hair is currently making me a very happy girl.
Being that I really do try to limit the heat now, I flat ironed my hair for the first time today in a week or two. I was thrilled to see how long my hair is getting. What was more exciting though, was just how healthy it looks and feels.
Oh yes, my everyday hairstyle way-back-when.
… Versus now, even if these were nicer than normal because they were for special occasions.
There are still days when I’d much rather restrict than eat. But when I take notice of my now luscious locks, it reminds me to be thankful my body is being fed. It may be a small thing, but I like to think anything that makes me the slightest bit happy about eating is exciting and blog worthy. After all, it is the little things that mean the most. It’s often the little things that keep me going, even little things like laughing about the progress I’ve made with my hair.
