It’s easy to ignore the words of songs such as these. To sing along with the congregation in church, listening to the voices rising, but never truly hearing. When you let the full meaning of this song wash over you though, there’s a lot of power that comes flooding over you with it. That power only comes if you can allow yourself to believe the words though. I will be the first to admit to you that there are concepts I struggle to accept after believing the enemy’s lies for so long. I will also be the first to admit that I often am the only thing standing in my way of believing some of these things. I’m fortunate where music is concerned though. Music stirs something within me. Music is my passion, and certain songs have ability to get to the very core of my being and touch my heart.
Even still, the concept of a truly ubiquitous God is difficult for my brain. I find it very difficult to comprehend that God is with me every minute of every day—regardless of circumstances—when there are billions of other people on the earth He’s also with. I feel as if I should be forgotten, nothing to “waste” time on. God doesn’t view it as wasting time though. When He sends troubles our way, He doesn’t intend to leave us out in the pouring rain alone; He sits right next to us through the storm. When we’re celebrating a birthday, He’s beaming as we blow out our candles. When we’re crying all alone, His hand is on our shoulder. He wants to be with each of us for every second of our lives. It’s so very true: He will not forsake us, not even for a moment.
When we follow the Living God, we follow a constant God. In all the hurry, hustle and bustle, and general chaos of the world, He remains the same, steady presence He always has been. Never leaving our sides, never losing His footing, never becoming tired, never needing a break. He has retained His power since the beginning of time. And when we come to realize that all of this means that we will always, as the children of God, have a loving father rooting for us, there’s gravity in that. I find a lot of comfort in that particularly in recovery. On the days when I don’t think I have the strength to keep going, I know God has more than enough for both of us. Meredith Andrews is talented, to be sure. Combining the beauty of, and emotions in her voice with the lyrics of the song create a piece of art that, for me, brings an overwhelming since of security. It’s one of the many letters I’ve received from God. This is one of those songs that I listen to, and my soul is stirred and encouraged. It’s one of the heart touchers, and for me, that’s powerful.
