The moments in which I cannot choose what music I want to listen to are few and far between. They do occur on occasion though. In those moments, I run to Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson, also known as: The Piano Guys. This piano and cello duo love to put a classical twist on modern day hits. The resulting arrangements are breathtaking, and even people who are not fans of classical music typically can find enjoyment in experiencing the energy of these two men. It is nearly impossible to be disappointed when each new arrangement they create is seemingly more captivating than the last.
The beauty in wordless music is that regardless of what’s going on in life, it is applicable. Some aspect of the piece will find its way into my heart and nestle there, stirring things around as music so often does for me. I may love falling asleep to the gentle melodies produced by the duo, yet I also love listening to their more upbeat covers in the car on sunny days. I find classical music to be something as versatile as the songs you may hear on the radio. No, they do not have articulated words, but they each have character and a story to tell. Performed by passionate people, classical pieces come to life.
The Piano Guys’ magnificent melodies have kept me company through hours of homework, long car rides and flights, sleepless nights, and even the crafting of numerous blog posts. Perhaps I am simply a strange seventeen year-old, but I can never get enough of Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson’s talent. Thus, in moments when I am indecisive in my music choice or unsure of what song may accompany the emotions within me, I have the Piano Guys. With their music covering a broad spectrum of moods and tempos, I can always find something amongst their many arrangements. The familiar sounds of each instrument are soothing, so, perhaps, for someone who loves her instrument and finds that it is a wonderful outlet and distraction, this love and appreciation for classical music isn’t so strange after all.
